Staff Cadet Training Syllabus

Objectives

  1. to provide aspirant staff cadets with guidelines for their development as useful members of group staff and, ultimately, as qualified mountain leaders
  2. to encourage course leaders to provide opportunities for aspirant staff cadets to gain relevant, practical training and experience under supervision.

Personal Qualities

The typical staff cadet:

will have attended several Wing adventure training courses as a cadet
will be 16 or older
will aspire to gaining personal MLTB and/or SPA qualifications, and be registered for the scheme
will be available for at least four courses a year (including the winter and/or summer expedition)
will have a personality that allows them to establish correct working relationships with staff and cadets
will demonstrate leadership potential both on the hill and in the centre
will have an above-average level of fitness and the capacity to work harder than the average cadet

Mountaineering

navigation
ropes, knots, security on steep ground
clothing, equipment and "rucsac management"
route selection and planning factors
first aid, including identification and treatment of hypothermia
practical experience of navigation and group management

Climbing

selection, use and care of equipment
crag etiquette
principles of climbing; setting up and using belays
practical experience of rock climbing and abseiling

General skills

group management
maintaining control
maintaining morale
authorisation and approvals - what the approval allows us to do
risk assessment
staff-cadet ratios
knowing our limits
centre routine
inventory control
food preparation
housekeeping
