Staff Cadets

The group uses staff cadets to assist with its mountain activities courses, and many of these cadets go on to become adult instructors with the group. With an increasing number of cadets asking how they can become staff cadets, we recently formalised the process to:

clarify the role of a staff cadet, and explain how they are selected
identify the skills and qualities expected of a staff cadet
provide guidance for cadets wishing to attain these skills

A potential staff cadet will have attended several courses and shown that they have the commitment and personal qualities to become a mountain leader. As their experience grows, they take an increasingly active role in leading parties on the hills under the supervision of course staff. Staff training courses give them the opportunity to improve their technical skills in navigation, security on steep ground and emergency procedures

More information about our policy selecting and developing staff cadets can be found under Staff cadet FAQ. To see the technical and leadership skills that the staff cadet is expected to develop click Syllabus
