Expeditions
Courses provide an excellent introduction to adventure training, and
are an effective way to teach specific mountaineering or
canoeing skills. They are
easy to organise, and the cadets simply have to turn up on the right day with
their consent form, course fee and a packed bag
Expeditions provide a very different experience. The Duke of Edinburgh
Award handbook sums it up well by stating that the aim of an expedition is to encourage
a spirit of adventure and discovery, requiring:
 | enterprise & imagination in concept |
 | forethought, careful attention to detail & organisational ability in
preparation |
 | Preparatory training, both theoretical & practical, leading to the
ability to journey safely in the chosen environment |
 | shared responsibility for the venture, leadership from within the group,
self reliance and co-operation among those taking part |
 | determination in execution |
The group's most ambitious international expeditions so far have been to
Nepal in 1991 and to Canada in 2000. Click the buttons on the left to learn just
what is involved in organising a major expedition, and to see what was achieved
Now the group is starting to plan the next
trip, and we are actively looking at the viability of a couple of ideas. Watch this
site for details or better still, come to us with your proposal ... it might be
just what we're looking for!
