Introduction
HBWATG
has provided adventure
training for cadets in Herts and Bucks Wing ATC
for more than 20 years, with activities like fell walking, scrambling, climbing,
abseiling and mountain biking in the hills, and kayaking and (open) canoeing
on rivers and lakes. Opportunities for cadets and staff range
from basic training courses to expeditions in the UK and overseas. The group also provides
training and
support for Gold expeditions in the Duke of Edinburgh Award
scheme (DEAS)
As an established centre of competence within the Wing the
group's role in developing new leaders and instructors is vital, ensuring that adventure training remains a key activity for
the next generation of cadets. During the past year the group has taken a
leading role in managing the new requirements for staff qualifications,
and this will continue with the introduction of BELA courses over the next
few months
Outside
the Wing the group is well known for its overseas expeditions, including an
unsupported canoe journey through the Canadian wilderness in 2000, and
the ascent of a 20,000' Himalayan mountain in 1991 - the picture above shows
members of the group crossing a glacier at 19,500' just before they
climbed the ice
cliff to the summit ridge

- past, present and future. It also provides information of wider interest
